You're at home in an electrical storm with thunder and lighting getting closer. There is a huge flash of lightning that you see and 4 seconds later you hear the crashing sound of the thunder. How far away did lightning strike?
Also, how far away would the lightning strike need to be for it to take 4 seconds for you to see it? The key here is that light and sound travel at vastly different speeds.
